Reflecting over the year and establishing goals that matter

*This post includes affiliate links that allow me to be compensated by your purchase and pardon me if the post seems scattered, my recap of the year and whatever God has dropped on me for the days to come just kinda dumped on this page. Just come with me…

For the next 31 days I’m digging into the truth of our first book study of the year She Reads Truth: Holding Tight To Permanent in A World That’s Passing Away .

BUT FIRST, here’s where I am.

On the last Friday of the year, I spent several hours gathering tools to get organized, to clean out closets and declutter my brain…

I mumbled to my daughter that I still needed a verse to meditate on and she spouted “JAMES 1:3 OR 1:5” I looked at her and said  really? She laughed and jokingly assured me that she had no idea what it said… YALL!!!!!!

“For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed you will be perfect and complete needing nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking” (New Living Translation)

Today has been filled with lots of reflecting, praying, crying, wondering, praying, praising and more crying.

Overwhelmed by God’s grace this year and the way He made sure I knew who He is, was and always will be. Overwhelmed by all of the things He let me do and all of the stuff He protected me from, including myself. As I’m slowly working through the Lara Casey’s #2017goalsetting series my heart is flooded with so much reassurance that the only things I need to be concerned with are the things that matter most in God’s eyes and I can rest in knowing He always has an answer; even if He needs to use my kids. I have my word for 2017 and I can’t wait to see how He unfolds it. For sure James 1:3-5 is a great jump off point!!!!
Ok. So I’m ready to step into the new year with the focus of my heart that anything is possible. I’m willing to get raw and honest and recognize that I’ve been rationalizing some things with God and my heart was harboring some emotional junk that started weighing me down. Over the next 31 days I’m going to be detoxing my mind, body and spirit to flush out the toxic stuff that I have allowed in. Stuff like too many lazy days, too much sugar and coffee, too much comparison and too much fear. I’m also realizing that somewhere I got really comfortable with the amount of exercise I was doing (or not doing) and I realized I can’t even do a push up like I use to. I’m sure that somewhere my body needed rest that it hadn’t seen in a long time and then I got comfortable in the rest.
SEE, this is why balance is so important to being healthy.
Ok, so, My ONE WORD for 2017 is ESTABLISH

My mentor says if you answer a call on your life and you’re so afraid of it that it makes you want to throw up, you’re on track with Gods plan.

My greatest desire is to see people healthy from the inside out. And that is risky. It’s risky because it means me being honest, transparent & crazy vulnerable sharing my story that I haven’t always been healthy and there are parts of me that are still being repaired.

Brokenness aside, Jesus offers me wholeness and I WANT IT ALL.

Not just for me and my family.

I want whole for you, and you and yes you; the one who’s heart is set on making sure the world knows how unbroken you are by shouting about your freedom & proving your worth & seeking their approval.

With open hands, a surrendered heart and scared out of my mind (Romans 12 & James 1) I’m walking into 2017 to own what God has already done & claim the victory for the battle that has already been won.

Cheers to punching fear in the face and being who God calls you!

2017 is all about helping us ESTABLISH better health, better goals and wholeness inside and out.

Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines ESTABLISH as

ESTAB’LISH, verb transitive [Latin stabilio; Heb. to set, fix, establish ]

1. To set and fix firmly or unalterably; to settle permanently.

I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant. Genesis 17:7.

2. To found permanently; to erect and fix or settle; as, to establish a colony or an empire.

3. To enact or decree by authority and for permanence; to ordain; to appoint; as, to establish laws, regulations, institutions, rules, ordinances, etc.

4. To settle or fix; to confirm; as, to establish a person, society or corporation, in possessions or privileges.

5. To make firm; to confirm; to ratify what has been previously set or made.

Do we then make void the law through faith?

God forbid; yea, we establish the law. Romans 3:31.

6. To settle or fix what is wavering, doubtful or weak; to confirm.

So were the churches established in the faith. Acts 16:5.

To the end he may establish your hearts unblamable in

holiness. l Thess.3.

7. To confirm; to fulfill; to make good.

Establish thy word to thy servant. Psalms 119:90

8. To set up in the place of another and confirm.

Who go about to establish their own righteousness. Romans 10:3.

Yeah. My mind is kinda blown on that one…

So I decided to search the inneractive website for the word ESTABLISH to see what God may have already spoken to me about. Y’all I love the way He starts weaving stories!

And, here’s a few honest questions (from the PowerSheets goal sheet) I’ve had to ask myself in the past few days but I’m still working through. And if you’re willing, I’d love for you to join me in this. So, grab a pen and a journal and let’s workout…

  • What am I grateful for from this past year?
  • What didn’t work this year?
  • What did work this year
  • What lessons have I learned

Lara Casey put together for the 2017 Goal Setting Series. Y’all I highly suggestion you go through all of the steps!

Alright. That’s where I am. That’s what God is speaking to me right now and I’m stepping boldly into this space. If you want to come with me, let’s go. There’s a fitness and nutrition component to this because during January we’ll be on the Daniel fast with our church. Click here to register for this part of the challenge… You don’t have to but it might help you stop trying to be better and actually help you get better. I mean, for me 2016 proved that I spent a whole lotta time getting bitter instead of getting better. I’m just sayin… click here

OOOH If Clean Eating is something you’ve been wanting to include in your life, NOW is the perfect time to start.

DAY ONE RESOURCE: I’m sharing this awesome 30 Day FitFluential #FFSpringClean Clean Eating Challenge.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5-8‬ ESV)

FYI: April is stress awareness month – the focus of this month’s challenge is not to strive to do anything perfect, but do everything on purpose!

How I measure success: do more with less

“Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it. Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have. Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have. Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality. Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal. As the Scriptures say, “Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough.””

2 Corinthians‬ ‭8:10-15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Did you have one word for this year? Maybe you called it an intention, mantra or focus. This is the one word that brings you back when you tend to get off course. When all of the shiny things catch your attention and comparison tries to have it’s way with your head and has you thinking all the things; this one word adjusts your focus.

My one word for this year was ESTABLISH. I’ll dig more into that in the next few posts or you’re free to do a search on this blog for the phrase “One Word” and take a look at the words over the past four years.  The reason I ask is because whenever we consider living healthy, it MUST be done in partnership with God and His (one) Word. Y’all you know it’s true, because left on our own; to our own devices we will rationalize and justify our plans and excuses and come up with options that seem good but they ultimately just feed our flesh (emotions, desires, lust etc) and without a doubt lead us down a slow slippery slope of destruction. Let me pause, I probably shouldn’t assume that just because you’re reading this that you’ve agreed to allow God access to that area of your life. Or even that you knew that was an option. That assumption is foolish and I apologize and would like to offer you some insight into why this is my WHY.

I’ve been a fitness trainer for almost 14 years and had it not been for someone inviting me to an aerobics class back when my days were filled with changing diapers, gold fish crackers and endless hours of Disney Channel, Storytime and Nick Jr.; I may have not known that God cared about my OWN wellbeing. My identity was completely consumed with life as a stay-at-home mom and the idea of Jesus being anywhere other than inside of a church building was foreign and reserved for the highly spiritual people; which I was not! So, fast forward to this life that has by trial and error found my hope, peace, joy, purpose, balance, breath and identity in Christ alone – not by perfection but grace – and I offer you a potentially brand new option and understanding of the often heard “let go and let God”

Back to the One Word. Here’s a better understanding of it, and a review of your own success if you’ve been on that journey yourself. I’d love to know in the comments what your one word is.

My One Word for 2017 is Establish. Again, I invite you to do a search on my blog to see how God has defined that word for me this year.

Alright friend, thank you for sticking around this far into the post. I have a few simple tools to help you measure your own success. Be well.

A few moves to keep your heart pumpin’

And a bit to keep your spirit movin’

Eat smart

Who decides to schedule a session with a trainer and nutrition coach DURING the holidays?
The person that refuses to be a slave to the fork or the scale.
The person that says that they don’t need to wait until January to “get it together”.
The person that says “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired”.
The person who says just because I can, doesn’t mean it’s worth it.
The person who says there’s a way that seems right but I’ve found out that it’s slowly destroying my body, my mind and my spirit.
Are you that person?
I’m opening my January calendar now to take on 5 new clients for personal training and nutrition coaching. If this is you, contact me and let’s schedule a consultation.
1 Corinthians 10:23 (AMPC)
All things are legitimate [permissible—and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].
When it comes to eating healthy, whether during the holidays or on a day-to-day decision, our best choices are made when they are focused on what will nourish us well. As most of us are in different seasons of life and none of our bodies are identical; it would be down-right foolish of me to Rx or dare you to subscribe to a one size fits all meal plan. Having said that, I have put together a simple grocery shopping list of a few staples I keep in our house to feed my family well. If you find something on that list that just doesn’t agree with your taste, then don’t eat it. Be sure to grab that list here.  If you know that you need a more personalized plan, I’d love to schedule a consultation with you.  You can find more information about my nutrition coaching programs here.

A soundtrack for your success in this season

Permission to be grateful & still desire change

You can be grateful and still desire change

It happens, probably more times than I dare to admit. I find myself, comparing myself, with the many layers of my former self.

Then, without even recognizing I’ve done it, I begin to lose the joy I so tangibly felt the Lord give me. The immeasurable, unspeakable joy that seemed to overwhelm me, somehow quickly evaporates as immediate as the thought came and went.

But it makes me question, was it the thought that stole the joy or has the thought simply clouded my understanding of why I have the joy. (TRUTH BOMB: John10:10)

It’s like driving down the street and seeing things clearly in your front window and all of a sudden you drive into a patch of dense fog and humidity and your windows become smudged from both the inside and outside. It’s easy to assume that there is no way to see clearly until you hit that defrost button on the dashboard. Viola!! I can see clearly now.  This is what happens in the moment of a thought. We can actually hit that “defrost my mind” button called the Holy Spirit and literally have Him clear the way.  (1 Corinthians 13:10-12, Psalm 119:105)

Yesterday I asked God to clarify something that caused me to slightly lose my joy. Not completely lose it, but you know, one of those thoughts that made me sad. That’s a lie, it made me frustrated. It made me frustrated, then I started second guessing my own worth and then came the comparisons and then the fear, the bitterness, the resentment, the judgement, the this and the that and one thing after another I found myself upset with myself. All because of one tiny thought.

But here’s the thing friend, that thought is tiny enough to ruin you. It’s like a grain of sand in your shoe. Or a splinter in your palm. Or an eyelash in your eye, that you can’t find. Or the papercut… I think you get what I mean. (Galatians 5:7-9)

“When I am consumed by my problems-stressed out about my life, my family, and my job-

I actually convey the belief that I think the circumstances are more important than God’s command to always rejoice.”
― Francis ChanCrazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

Let’s talk about this frustration and what it’s doing to our spirit, soul and body.

FRUSTRA’TIONnoun The act of frustrating; disappointment; defeat; as the frustration of one’s attempt or design. (Source: Websters 1828 dictionary)

  1. the feeling of being upset or annoyed, especially because of inability to change or achieve something.
“I sometimes feel like screaming with frustration”
    synonyms: exasperationannoyanceangervexationirritation;

    • an event or circumstance that causes one to have a feeling of frustration.
      plural noun: frustrations
“the inherent frustrations of assembly line work”
    • the prevention of the progress, success, or fulfillment of something.
      “the frustration of their wishes”
      synonyms: thwarting, defeatprevention, foiling, blocking, spoiling, circumvention, forestalling, disappointmentderailment;

(Source: google definitions, frustration synonyms)

alllllrighty then…

Y’all… ok can we seriously just pause there and talk about this. What are we doing to ourselves? Frustration is prevention, blocking, derailing… (Galatians 5: You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth?) …man I could seriously list all of the physical implications of this havoc on our bodies. Not to mention, what’s happening in our bodies is a result of what’s happening in our minds and our choices. Oh goodness, y’all can we look at this connection to what’s coming out of our mouths?

Our words have tremendous power to either give life or snatch it. Friends, we cannot allow the enemy to gain so much territory in our minds. (Ephesians 4:25-28 New Living Translation)

So, yeah I’ll admit it. People frustrate me when I see their potential and they refuse to rise up to it. I get frustrated with myself when I realize the time wasters that are just flat out foolish.

Several weeks ago I attended a women’s leadership conference and had a million and one moments with the Holy Spirit where He kept nudging me reminding me that I was hearing truths He had been speaking to me all year. But that I hadn’t moved on what He had spoken to me because of fear, I’m gonna even suggest frustration. At the end of the conference I literally had no words to describe what happened. The next day the Lord told me it was an awakening. (Ephesians 5:14)

See my word for this year is ESTABLISH. Present tense. He told me that He was going to show me all the things that were in me that I doubted, questioned, wondered if they’d ever be used, and even ignored because I thought they were too much or not enough. All of the areas in my life where I kept disqualifying myself, this year He’s been reaffirming and redeeming. This revelation hasn’t been anything new, and it’s nothing unique to me. See God is in the business of reminding us who we are, in Him and He has one specific plan; that we would know that we are dearly loved by Him, perfectly. This perfect love removes all of that fear, doubt, questioning and wondering. The scarcity mindset of second guessing if we’ll be enough or have enough is blotted out when we recognize that we get to live and love others from the overflow of what He has freely given us. Go back and read Ephesians 4 then might I suggest that we park on James 3.

Job 22:28-30 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

When you make a decision, it will be carried out, and light will shine on your ways. When others are humiliated and you say, “Lift them up,” God will save the humble. He will even rescue the guilty one, who will be rescued by the purity of your hands.

After the leadership conference I went on a personal development journey in an effort to clear out some mental clutter and came across the podcast of one of the speakers. I attempted to listen to one episode of her podcast but almost vomited on my own pride when I read the title. “Excuses That Steal Your Time”; almost immediately a word cloud response regurgitated from the pit of my stomach flooded with everything I thought I was doing productively. Y’all busy isn’t productive. Talking about our stuff isn’t progress. Rehashing old injuries isn’t beneficial.

1 Corinthians 10:23Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

All things are legitimate [permissible—and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].

Desiring Change

Half of the reason many of us struggle with body image and self esteem issues is because we only know how to do the work in our heads but we don’t know why we are worth more than just a number on the scale or our clothes so we keep learning more assuming more is better.

Well, more is not better, better is better. But again, I say, we must be mindful of whether we are just (head) learning it; do we know it in our hearts?

The REVELATION concerning WELLNESS is a heart issue. Go read Chapters 5 & 6. Those 2 chapters alone could teach a years worth of lessons!

My next Wellness Revelation small group begins in January, however if you’re interested in participating in a 7 day detox click here to sign up…

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.

So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it. You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:6-9, 16, 18-23‬ ‭NLT‬‬
