The Great Pumpkin

Good grief Linus, if it weren’t for the pun-kin smashin’ we’d never know the glory of the gourd.

Just a year ago, we searched high and low, from Walmart to Harrys, looking for this glorious fruit. Us pumpkin lovers across the globe searched and searched wondering if we were having a case of  “it’s-so-close-you-can’t-see-it”  only to find our worse nightmare had come true.   NO PUMPKIN!

For 1 solid year we patiently waited and waited, hoping our harvest had not run out. Our toil and sowing was not in vain, for behold…THE GREAT PUMPKIN has returned. And what a great pumpkin season it has been thus far!

First let me just say that perusing the bloggosphere I have discovered there is a bloggin’ breed of us pumpkin lovers. I have found everything from the seasonally spiced baked deliciousness, to the protein packed pumpkin smoothie and (cue drumroll) a CRAZY LOW CALORIE pumpkin cheese cake recipe thanks to the folks at Hungry Girl

But… I was sadly disappointed when I discovered that not all pumpkin paraders are created equal.  See a few years ago I went on my harvesting frenzy snatchin’ up every manner of pumpkin goodness I could find only to have the nutmeg knocked out of me by some garlic toting imposter! Pumpkin soup ain’t no cake! YUCK YUCK and double YUCK! To the defense of the soup, my taste buds were hoping for warm, creamy and cinnaminy…not so much… I got a crock-pot-ish savor of onion, bouillon and pepper. I KNOW RIGHT! Palate shock! Oh man, I almost forgot to share a little pumpkin-gone-wrong (AS IF) repurpose…

(So sorry I beg the brand for forgiveness) Hershey’s Pumpkin Spice kiss…(not to be eaten) drop one in your coffee for a hint of spice.

So enough about that!

On to sweetness and pumpkin I am soooo proud to share with you this season! (side note a friend informed me that the golden arches are donning a pumpkin milkshake-just might have to break my boycot.

Disclaimer: Pumpkin obsessions & flavor often trump caloric value…just sayin’

First up: Drink up!

Crisp air and changing leaves brings on a desire to cuddle up, get cozy and nuzzle something warm and comforting.

I have discovered Bigelow Tea has Pumpkin Patch Autumn Spice flavor, add a dash of creamer and it’s ALMOST better than the syrup-y sister at the coffee joint.

Pumkin Protein Shake

Ben & Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream (ehem I already tossed you the disclaimer)

Hungry Girl’s Upside down pumkin cheese cake ( worth screamin’ ’bout)

And my latest find…

Joanna Sutter’s Pumpkin Butter

  • 2 cups Pumpkin Puree
  • 1/2 cup Honey
  • 2 T Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 T Cinnamon
  • 1/2 t Nutmeg
  • 1 T Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • 1/4 t Salt

Put all ingredients into a sauce pan and simmer for 45 minutes on very low heat. Stir frequently. Refrigerate immediately.

Oh and I just have to give a super crazy shout out to Hungry Girl she rocks…today’s email was chocked full of you guessed it, PUMPKIN GOODIES!

So there you have it, tis the season for makin’ sumthin’ pumpkin’. It’s been said that the sweet potato is a close relative of the pumpkin flavor? hmmm not sure I can agree to that, although it would be interesting to see what pumpkin fries taste like? No? oh well, God bless us everyone!
