MAY I…Do something new

And to get from where you are, there must first be a desire to leave – Beth Moore

Mother May I.

Do y’all remember that game?
Here’s the gist of it:

One person (it could be Mom) stands facing away from a line of kids.
She then chooses a child (at random, or in order), and announces a direction. These follow a pattern, such as, “Brian, you may take ‘ x’ giant/regular/baby steps forward/backward.”

The child responds with “Mother may I?”

Mom then states “Yes” or “No”, depending on her whim, and the child complies.

If the child forgets to ask “Mother may I?” he/she goes back to the starting line. First one to touch Mother wins.

As I was thinking of our May challenge, I thought of this game.

I thought about how we should ask God for the things we want to move forward on.

This year our Pastor charged us with this year being the year to Pursue, Recover and Restore. So as we were all setting out goals for the year, we were/are being challenged with whether or not we’ve asked the Lord “shall I pursue” (1 Samuel 30). How often have we made these huge goals but never consulted with Him to see if it’s even in His plan for us. And I don’t know about y’all but I don’t want to miss a thing He has for me.

But here’s the thing, when we ask God “Father May I” we need to be willing to listen for His response and whatever instructions or recommendations He gives us. And, He might say no. OR, His answer for us might be that we should pursue but requires further instructions that look nothing like what we thought.

Typically His ways are not ours (Isaiah 55:8-9); But the blessing in all of this is that His response is NEVER depending on His whim, but ALWAYS depending on what’s best for us.

So this year, I’ve done some asking. And what He gave me was “HELP THE ONES WHO WANT THE HELP”.

SO, This month I’m asking your permission to help you get better.

All I’m asking you to do is let me know what you need and together, we’ll ask God for His instruction.

Why am I asking?

Because I don’t ever want to force anything on you. And I can’t help someone that hasn’t asked me to help them. I don’t ever want to make you think you absolutely have to do what I’m suggesting.

I may have very well been where you were at some point. Maybe not exactly, but I can promise you this. I’ve been in the pit, the ditch, the dumps and in the darkness. And I’ve also see what it feels like to know freedom. I also know what it feels like to know you’re accepted. I also know what it feels like to look in the mirror and with confidence see your own reflection and not see your mistakes but see the beautiful, wonderfully made woman God created you to be!

What a wonderful God we have—he is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy, and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does he do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us. You can be sure that the more we undergo sufferings for Christ, the more he will shower us with his comfort and encouragement. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

So, You’re here. And that could mean that you want what’s being offered. And all I can do is offer it. But if you give me permission. Ohhhh sister (or brother), that’s a whole new transformation waitin’ to happen.

Sound like a plan?

This month our focus is on that.

The transformation.

The metamorphosis if you will. Kinda like the metamorphosis of the butterfly.

The process of becoming something you had no idea you could be.

Wednesday’s WORD: Your Shape

Have you ever stopped to look at a jigsaw puzzle? How the pieces are uniquely cut to “FIT” in a specific space to complete the puzzle. Sometimes they’re shaped similar to another piece.

Sometimes when you look at the “BIG PICTURE OR FINISHED PUZZLE” in an attempt to see where it should fit, all the pieces start to look the same. But STILL they each have a place they’re supposed to be in.

✳️You were designed for a specific purpose.

Uniquely, wonderfully, marvelously (Psalm 139) to fit in the designated space God has set aside just for you.

. ✳️Your shape, your fit, your appearance are specific to that purpose

. ✳️Focus on your gifts, your talents, your “FIT” & let God place you where He knows you’ll complete His finished work!

God has called you specifically.

FOCUS: freedom of choices

20140127-125902.jpgWho, what, when, where, why and how much food should I be eating? Wanna know the answer?

YOU CHOOSE. YOU are free to choose what you eat, when you eat, where you eat, why you eat and how you eat. I mean really, ultimately it’s your body, you know the reason why you NEED to eat or even want to eat and you know best when to eat. Am I right?

Whether we’re eating for purpose or on purpose we get the final say. And in return, we get the final results. Good or bad.

I don’t believe in diets. I believe in proper balanced nutrition.

WHY? Because they don’t work. It’s impossible for two people with totally different lifestyles, metabolisms and physical makeup to eat the exact amount of food everyday and expect the exact results everyday.

If I give you a 32 oz container and a 12 oz container and I hand you a bag with 1500 marbles and said make sure both containers get the exact same amount of marbles… can you fairly/equally distribute those marbles and both containers be “full or satisfied”?

The same is true with our bodies.

Here’s the basics. You need to eat for YOUR BODY. Your height. Your weight management goal (loss/gain/maintain). Your lifestyle. Your health.

Everyday we all need to get an ample amount of healthy sources of protein, fats and carbs. YES CARBS. (we’ll go further into that later) When we start eliminating too many of either of these macronutritients we can quickly fall into malnutrition and our body will begin to attack itself.

Do you now how much you should be eating everyday?

Use this simple calculator to determine your daily calorie needs and your macronutrient breakdown.

In the words of my mother “I am not a short order cook, whatever I make, you’ll eat or you won’t eat at all.” I shop for my family. I cook for my family. I don’t have a section of the cabinet with “mommy’s healthy foods” and a pantry full of foods that I allow my kids to eat but wouldn’t be caught dead contaminating my own body with it.

We have an awesome opportunity to lead by example.

My husband says I’m the grocery manager, so if I bring it in the house, that gives them permission to eat it.

So guess what, we have a plan. Yes, a plan. It’s called the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time we are eating healthy, balanced nutritious meals and the other 20% we include foods like pizza, wings, ice cream or cupcakes. And even those things are enjoyed in moderation. It’s a learned discipline but once you introduce your mind and body to how amazing it feels with structure and healthy food, your body won’t crave the other stuff.

Alright. So let’s get to the good stuff.

I’ve pulled some of my absolute favorite resources for meal planning & grocery shopping and even included my “GO TO” list!

Holiday Body: Blessed MisFits

“You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. (Matthew 5:5 MSG)

Never underestimate the power of an invitation! If you’re the one being invited, humbly accept and humbly arrive. If you’re the one doing the inviting, open your house, your heart and your love.

I love my family because we are wildly quirky, perhaps strange to the average person, but they are mine! Every inside joke, every random look, every heart felt tear jerker memory…they’re mine and I’m blessed!

I love watching each of my kids find their ‘fit’ in our family and they’re learning each if their individual talents & gifts are needed for a specific purpose to complete our family puzzle.

Growing up with 7 siblings it amazes me that somehow we each played a unique role within our family & the people around us. But even as adults while I can see those roles being redefined; there were times I wondered how or where we ever ‘fit in’.

I sometimes question where I belong, which group I’m a part of and often I’ll watch the people around and try to see if we’d click.

Having a place to belong or connect with isn’t a about finding an identical match or carbon copy, I learned that quickly in my family. We’re all so very different yet collectively we’re one.

Think about keys & locks. They work because one needed to be shaped, refined and even a bit of heat grinding in order for it to work in the specific lock it was designed for.

Every friendship, job, skill I’ve ever had in my life I’ve tried to “fit” and God had truly shown me that as long as I would continue to squeeze or conform I would always be misfit. But if I allow Him to place me where I needed to be, I could be the specific one for that task!

I’m challenging you today to consider where you may have considered yourself or someone else the “misfit”. Ask God to continue to reshape you & put you exactly where you belong.

Luke 14

He went on to tell a story to the guests around the table. Noticing how each had tried to elbow into the place of honor, he said, “When someone invites you to dinner, don’t take the place of honor. Somebody more important than you might have been invited by the host. Then he’ll come and call out in front of everybody, ‘You’re in the wrong place. The place of honor belongs to this man.’ Red-faced, you’ll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left. “When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about! What I’m saying is, If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.” Then he turned to the host. “The next time you put on a dinner, don’t just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favor. Invite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks. You’ll be—and experience—a blessing. They won’t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned—oh, how it will be returned!—at the resurrection of God’s people.” (Luke 14:7-14 MSG)
