Whether it’s a gift for a mom, a sister, a friend, a grandmother, or significant other; we know that buying gifts for women can be somewhat challenging ESPECIALLY if you have no idea what her favorite things are. So, we surveyed a group of moms and asked them what was at the top of their Christmas wish list. Keep in mind, these items are evergreen so if you run into the gifting crunch again, you can give to your hearts content and they’ll NEVER be out of season! One more thing, while some of these gifts can be bought and wrapped with a perfect bow, some of them are far more precious than anything you could ever put under a tree and worth all of the effort you put into ‘packaging’ them.

April is Stress Awareness Month and it got me to thinking about Emotional eating: aren’t we all emotional eaters?

We celebrate with food; we show condolences or support with food; we even gather around found just to show how much we need each other.

I wonder could it be that it’s not so much the food that’s the issue but our emotions.

What if we got control of our emotions. We can usually control the food we turn to during the emotional roller coaster; the food feels like a safety net or a gas pedal depending on which road you’re on. But what about the emotions. Don’t emotions come from a trigger of perception concerning the situation? Perceptions create our responses = EMOTIONS

What if our perceptions changed and we began to see things different. If even in the midst of a “this is way beyond anything I ever imagined”; we paused and let God filter our response.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places; and talents in unexpected people, and give me the GRACE to tell them so. – unknown

What if, in this new season we allowed God to help us grow right where we are. Allow Him to reach into our hearts and find those perceptions that send us full speed ahead on a collision with doubt, fear, anxiety, comparison, inadequacy…(feel free to fill in the blanks)

Our emotions are real but we cannot let them continue to feed us lies! We cannot continue to allow them to take us down dead-end roads!

 Feel the music

This is one of my Zumba heros! She’s 80-somethin’ years old, belongs to a motor cycle gang and takes tap dancing in addition to Zumba! And boy does she have moves. She comes to Zumba with her daughter who’s in her 60’s who plays the drums and drives an 18 wheeler! I mean talk about grabbing life and enjoying the ride.

She decided to choose joy. She makes me happy when I see her dance!

When I dance, it’s like moving to the joy I choose. Dance has become an expression of a deep confession I can’t put into words.

dI feel the music deep down in my soul. It makes me happy! Yes I will clap along cuz I feel like happiness is a truth!

I’m so glad my life & wardrobe was delivered from blah! Life is better in color. I laugh because my fitness laundry resembles that of a crayon box explosion. I rarely share this story because very few people understand it. But here’s an opportunity because it’s bubbling up inside of me so I feel like somebody needs it.

My Truth

Several years ago I was restored from a wardrobe of brown, grey and black. Oh wait, no there was blue. Yes there was definitely navy blue. And that was the extent of my wardrobe. Every shirt, every pair of pants, every jacket, shoe and boot. Even my swimsuits were black (that was a whole other issue of freedom & confidence). I was comfortable in my dark clothing, yet I was extremely uncomfortable in my own skin.

It took lots of self assessments, spending time recognizing that all of the promises in the bible of forgiveness and restoration included me. It took a ton of letting go of my past, letting go of rejections, disappointment and resentment. I knew that God was doing something in me, that there was a huge purge and I could feel my shoulders pull back, my head began to lift higher and every muscle in my face started to take on a different structure. I never really said much to anyone concerning it I just slowly started adding color to my closet. I honestly think it was wearing the tropical colors in Zumba that started to pry me out of that shell.

But actually, it wasn’t until a friend asked me if I had grown taller that I realized something really did happen. She said she could see a visible difference that happened in me. She noticed I walked taller, I danced more freely and I was comfortable in my environments.

I cried later that night because that had been my prayer. I prayed for the shackles to come off so I could just dance! I believe I had entangled myself into a box of rules that I needed to look, act, speak, dance and even smile a certain way.

I wanted freedom and that wasn’t freedom.

I wanted to be free to move.

I wanted to be free to find my own fitness.

I wanted to be free to dance and be proud of my dance. I wanted to find my own fitness.

Finding my own ‘fitness’ meant standing face to face with the reality that maybe, just maybe, I was trying to live someone else’s idea of who I should be, or possibly living a life that I THOUGHT someone else expected me to live. The torture & defeat in both situations is in itself disappointment; attached to not being able to live up to what you think they think you should be. Talk about a tangled web of deception there.

The stress of trying to measure up, trying to figure out if you’re enough, trying to check your every move, every decision and everyTHING to see if it’s just like the ideal person (as distorted as that might be) you find yourself giving nearly 110% of who you are trying to be something & someone you were never intended to be.

That’s not freedom at all. That’s pure bondage. That’s living in a dark pit of deception.

But God doesn’t want us there. Praise God that His Mercy shows up even in the darkness and His light quiets the chaos.

He shines His light on us, not on the places we feel are inadequate but on the things He has done. How He created us, the gifts, the talents, the uniqueness in our creation. He wants us to see who we really are. He wants us to see how specifically He made us, no mistakes, no flaws just wonderful!

Spirit. Soul. Body. -wonderfully made

Have you ever stopped to look at a jigsaw puzzle? How the pieces are uniquely cut to “FIT” in a specific space to complete the puzzle. Sometimes they’re shaped similar to another piece.

Sometimes when you look at the “BIG PICTURE OR FINISHED PUZZLE” in an attempt to see where it should fit, all the pieces start to look the same. But STILL they each have a place they’re supposed to be in.

✳️You were designed for a specific purpose.

Uniquely, wonderfully, marvelously (Psalm 139) to fit in the designated space God has set aside just for you.

. ✳️Your shape, your fit, your appearance are specific to that purpose

. ✳️Focus on your gifts, your talents, your “FIT” & let God place you where He knows you’ll complete His finished work!

20140127-125902.jpgWho, what, when, where, why and how much food should I be eating? Wanna know the answer?

YOU CHOOSE. YOU are free to choose what you eat, when you eat, where you eat, why you eat and how you eat. I mean really, ultimately it’s your body, you know the reason why you NEED to eat or even want to eat and you know best when to eat. Am I right?

Whether we’re eating for purpose or on purpose we get the final say. And in return, we get the final results. Good or bad.

I don’t believe in diets. I believe in proper balanced nutrition.

WHY? Because they don’t work. It’s impossible for two people with totally different lifestyles, metabolisms and physical makeup to eat the exact amount of food everyday and expect the exact results everyday.

If I give you a 32 oz container and a 12 oz container and I hand you a bag with 1500 marbles and said make sure both containers get the exact same amount of marbles… can you fairly/equally distribute those marbles and both containers be “full or satisfied”?

The same is true with our bodies.

WHAT:

Here’s the basics. You need to eat for YOUR BODY. Your height. Your weight management goal (loss/gain/maintain). Your lifestyle. Your health.

Everyday we all need to get an ample amount of healthy sources of protein, fats and carbs. YES CARBS. (we’ll go further into that later) When we start eliminating too many of either of these macronutritients we can quickly fall into malnutrition and our body will begin to attack itself.

HOW:

In the words of my mother “I am not a short order cook, whatever I make, you’ll eat or you won’t eat at all.” I shop for my family. I cook for my family. I don’t have a section of the cabinet with “mommy’s healthy foods” and a pantry full of foods that I allow my kids to eat but wouldn’t be caught dead contaminating my own body with it.

WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE DOES THAT SEND?

We have an awesome opportunity to lead by example.

My husband says I’m the grocery manager, so if I bring it in the house, that gives them permission to eat it.

So guess what, we have a plan. Yes, a plan. It’s called the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time we are eating healthy, balanced nutritious meals and the other 20% we include foods like pizza, wings, ice cream or cupcakes. And even those things are enjoyed in moderation. It’s a learned discipline but once you introduce your mind and body to how amazing it feels with structure and healthy food, your body won’t crave the other stuff.

Alright. So let’s get to the good stuff.
