Summer Goals

Initially I didn’t think this (type of) devotional was for me. Because honestly, I have felt like the word REST has become a buzz word. I have felt like we’ve all begun to learn really how to lay down the hustle (just another check mark on our to-do lists) and DO self care. It’s kinda felt counterproductive. Like we’re DOING rest.

But God knew He could get my attention by whispering the promises that were grace-filled. Promises of confidence, contentment and peace (Philippians 4:6-13) tucked away in the meaning of that word.

I’m a peacemaker. By default and defense from a broken childhood; but God has used what had become my defensive weapon and caused it to become my best offensive weapon. (Matthew 5)

But friends that strategy did not happen by my own well crafted, skilled ideas; that only happened after I got brave enough to be still (content & quiet) and learned to listen.

SIDE BAR: quiet and withdrawn was also my defense from a loud chaotic home filled with violent rage and anger. God revealed to me a few months ago that I in fact am not shy, that I had settled for that label because it was safe, but the real me was wildly free and contagiously full of joy! THAT MAKES ME SO GIDDY I CAN HARDLY SIT STILL!!!

So many things (too many things) are calling our names. And we are answering.

Bonnie Gray writes in the devotional Whispers Of Rest: 40 Days of God’s Love to Revitalize Your Soul “Samuel, who was living in the temple ran to Eli the priest thinking Eli was calling him. It happened three times. (1 Samuel 3:8-11) in the same way, we can easily run from one thing to another answering other voices that demand doing, work, fear and busyness. But the fourth time God called him, Samuel did something different. Samuel dared to listen.”

Friends can I ask you, how do you hear God talk to you?

Have you heard Him call you but assumed it was something else calling your name?

Can I challenge you? I believe that one of the things that calls our name and our bluff is the fear that we aren’t enough which leads us toward comparison and under appreciating our original design.

Your body is beautiful and whether you’ve decided to put on a suit and spend more time enjoying life’s precious moments or you’re still standing in the proverbial fitting room arguing with your reflection; I have one thing to tell you, and I need you to look in the mirror and repeat this YOU ARE FLAWESOME!!!

Not a single one of us is perfect, we all got some flaws and He STILL calls us awesome! (Psalm 139)

This year I’m using Whispers Of Rest as our weekly prompts of peace!

FOCUS: Meditation & Confession

Today we’re talking MEDITATION✨ (inspired by @SheReadsTruth ) To meditate:

“to engage in contemplation or reflection; to focus one’s thoughts on: reflect on or ponder over”.

“Researchers now believe that *any* activity that requires focused attention and being in the moment can count as your daily dose of meditation. This includes shifting your focus from what you’re doing, to a moment-by-moment consideration of the larger meaning of the activity in your life” (SOURCE: Natural Health Magazine)

When you give attention to allowing God’s words to be your compass, your coming & going, your ups & downs; He fills your life & passion with His light, this opens the door to allow your work to become an opportunity of meditation giving Him honor in your service. The ultimate goal is for our lives to be an outward demonstration of an inner conviction.

When I dance, it’s in a sense meditation. Even on the days that I’m teaching to huge crowds or presenting at a major health & fitness event I zone out. I know that God has given me this ability & this gift and it’s an honor that He chose me. So each time I get a chance to display what He’s done, it’s my opportunity to show off Him and His awesomeness.

Dancing puts me in my zone. My zone is a personal praise. During one of my Zumba classes we danced to the song Happy by Pharrell. Afterward, a student came to me and asked if it was wrong that she started praising God right in the middle of our dancing & whooping. I laughed and said “nope cuz I got my praise on too”!!!

Meditation is simply ‘thinking on’ something. Doesn’t the scriptures in Philippians 4:8 tell us to think on or think about;

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8 NIV)

Adjust Your Focus

Stop picking yourself & your life apart. Look back at that passage.

ASSIGNMENT: Recognize and write down the TRUE, NOBLE, RIGHT, PURE, ADMIRABLE, EXCELLENT, PRAISEWORTHY; when you’re making this list, do not listen to the lies! Any thought that sneaks into your mind that makes you feel less than any of those descriptions, throw it in the fire and let it burn!!!!

Keep Your Heart Pumpin & Spirit Movin

⚓️in the Spirit of meditation, reflect on these words.

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the [whole] person; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure and bright, enlightening the eyes. The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. FOCUS: Emotional eating

April is Stress Awareness Month and it got me to thinking about Emotional eating: aren’t we all emotional eaters?

We celebrate with food; we show condolences or support with food; we even gather around found just to show how much we need each other.

I wonder could it be that it’s not so much the food that’s the issue but our emotions.

What if we got control of our emotions. We can usually control the food we turn to during the emotional roller coaster; the food feels like a safety net or a gas pedal depending on which road you’re on. But what about the emotions. Don’t emotions come from a trigger of perception concerning the situation? Perceptions create our responses = EMOTIONS

What if our perceptions changed and we began to see things different. If even in the midst of a “this is way beyond anything I ever imagined”; we paused and let God filter our response.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places; and talents in unexpected people, and give me the GRACE to tell them so. – unknown

What if, in this new season we allowed God to help us grow right where we are. Allow Him to reach into our hearts and find those perceptions that send us full speed ahead on a collision with doubt, fear, anxiety, comparison, inadequacy…(feel free to fill in the blanks)

Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:18, 19 AMP)

Our emotions are real but we cannot let them continue to feed us lies! We cannot continue to allow them to take us down dead-end roads!

Join us for the April Spring Cleaning F.O.C.U.S. (I’m not calling it a challenge, cuz it seems we’ve seen enough of those but we have yet to adjust our focus. It’s time to adjust our focus otherwise we’ll keep facing the same challenges!)
