How to unlearn old habits

Speak

So much of our internal battles to care for ourselves; spirit, soul and body; is less about learning new things and so much more about unlearning old habits.

 

Find an opportunity of unlearning

Can we talk about this  sneaky form of competition that’s been lurking around and we seem to just keep living with it?  
It’s called pride.
It’s called I want what she’s got.
It’s called there’s no way I could possibly qualify or be good enough.
It’s called I can’t receive (don’t want to hear) anything from her because she has what I should have and that’s not fair for me to have to humble myself and listen to her.
It’s called satan couldn’t and wasn’t so he wants to see to it that you don’t and aren’t.
It’s called a giant, and it must fall.
Oh friends, we have two options; either agree with the Truth that God; in all of His enoughness; has created us in His image with gifts that are too many to name and therefore it’s not possible for the abundance to run out. OR we fold our arms, stump our feet and throw a pride/pity party in the name of satan’s anthem – aka defeat.
 
FIRST – His perfect love removes all fear. Jealousy, doubt, envy, pride, and rejection are all fear based reactions.  They cause us to either rise up in our own pride and ability and begin to strut our peacock tails or on the reverse we shut down, draw back and turtle.
SECOND – Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 1 Corinthians 13
For the word of the God is living and effective and sharper than any double edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Find a rhythm to move to
Be available to the community God has placed you in. Be your truest self (flaws and all) and this will allow the light of Christ that is in to shine. Even when you think it’s not very bright, the tiniest light breaks darkness; and those who feel like they’re wandering and grasping for hope will find your light; the Light He placed in you. When they find it, be ready with an answer of the hope that keeps you anchored.

 

Find a tribe to help you establish commitments

I teamed up with some of my faith and fitness sisters for a month long challenge called Resolution Recommit. Each week there’s a new theme and throughout the week we’re encouraged with devotionals, workouts, nutrition and meal advise and a sweet little community.

This past week, one of the devotionals included the message of beauty. It struck a chord, well more like a nerve.

Oh yall. It was loaded with permission.

Permission to be you and enjoy the you that God created. She spoke about how much she whole-heartedly just loves fashion and make up and expressing herself through art and music and she’s learned to not apologize for any of that.

Friends, I think sometimes we get tripped up and lost in translation and assume that God says we aren’t to be concerned with the outward appearance but ONLY our inner selves.

But NO. He doesn’t say that.

Jesus DOES remind us that yes we shouldn’t be so impressed with the outside of the cup if/when the inside is filthy but we are also reminded that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, where He lives and I’m not sure He would want to live in a beat up dilapidated shack.

We GET TO take care of these bodies. We are HIS BODY, HIS HANDS, HIS FEET, His representation on this earth. I would think it’s worth us considering it a high priority to take care of the body He let us borrow to do His work.

I don’t know about you, but on both sides of the self-care coin was a battle of competition. The one that said I was too much and the other one that says I wasn’t enough.

I’m still allowing God to work out this thing in me as I gut my closets of failed attempts to be someone I’m actually not.

Trends, idols, icons, inspirations, fears, pressures, you name it and they had won over both my heart and my budget and I tried for years to figure out what I was suppose to look like and not draw attention to. I fought the battle of the skinny jeans and the flat abs and the J-Lo booty and well, good genes won and reminded me that some things are suppose to be there and others; well Jesus.

 The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.

The best way to battle the lies of competition – which robs you of pretty much everything in your original design; is to sit with yourself and God and find a community of friends who will speak the truth in love over you. Be available to the community God has placed you in. 1 Peter 5:6 reminds us to be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.

Have you ever dealt with anxiety? 

I have. FOR YEARS!!! And here’s where I found the solution! 

And I continue to use it whenever new issues, people, things, and problems try to overwhelm me! 

And yes, you’ll need to continue to ‘work it out’ on a regular basis just like one visit to the gym won’t make you fit, one prayer won’t keep you well! 

  

Surrender

No spirit of fear

February: love this not that

 

Do you realize the number of people who miss out on opportunities simply because they spent way too much quality time trying to decide if they were qualified?

Too many of us sacrifice God’s best simply because we settle for status quo or we’re so busy trying to fit in  that we miss the mark and wind up feeling lonely, frustrated and defeated.

Satan’s goal is to pull you away from the people, purpose and plan that God has appointed for your life. The way he lures us is the same way he lured Eve, by convincing her that God was withholding something she was entitled to. But she already HAD everything. And he knew that. 

So what does satan do? Tells her that she’s not enough as she is; that she has to have that one more thing in order to be ‘who God created her to be’ and the only reason God told her she couldn’t have it was because God knew she’d be greater than Him. 

Sound familiar? 

That’s because Satan uses the same trick on all of us. He doesn’t have the ability or authority to create anything new!! 

I’ll wait for that to sink in… 

Your daily activities, your career goals, your choices; all of these are impacted by what we value most. And Satan will always make himself available to conjure up a substitution for God’s best. 

Friends, even when we are lured in by his cunning tricks, the moment we recognize that we slipped; God is ready and waiting to welcome us back into His arms.

Love is not so much words but action – love is a verb

One part of our #februaryfitness challenge is to love the best of ourselves and lose the rest of it. What could you stand to love about your marriage? Whatever you sow is what you reap! 

Be willing to do the better things concerning your marriage (or family/relationships). 

Today I challenge you to read & meditate on 1 Corinthians 13 and consider how much God has loved us & keeps loving us NO MATTER what! His kind of love is our guide! 

Love richly, care deeply, forgive quickly

FOCUS: Meditation & Confession

Today we’re talking MEDITATION✨ (inspired by @SheReadsTruth ) To meditate:

“to engage in contemplation or reflection; to focus one’s thoughts on: reflect on or ponder over”.

“Researchers now believe that *any* activity that requires focused attention and being in the moment can count as your daily dose of meditation. This includes shifting your focus from what you’re doing, to a moment-by-moment consideration of the larger meaning of the activity in your life” (SOURCE: Natural Health Magazine)

When you give attention to allowing God’s words to be your compass, your coming & going, your ups & downs; He fills your life & passion with His light, this opens the door to allow your work to become an opportunity of meditation giving Him honor in your service. The ultimate goal is for our lives to be an outward demonstration of an inner conviction.

When I dance, it’s in a sense meditation. Even on the days that I’m teaching to huge crowds or presenting at a major health & fitness event I zone out. I know that God has given me this ability & this gift and it’s an honor that He chose me. So each time I get a chance to display what He’s done, it’s my opportunity to show off Him and His awesomeness.

Dancing puts me in my zone. My zone is a personal praise. During one of my Zumba classes we danced to the song Happy by Pharrell. Afterward, a student came to me and asked if it was wrong that she started praising God right in the middle of our dancing & whooping. I laughed and said “nope cuz I got my praise on too”!!!

Meditation is simply ‘thinking on’ something. Doesn’t the scriptures in Philippians 4:8 tell us to think on or think about;

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8 NIV)

Adjust Your Focus

Stop picking yourself & your life apart. Look back at that passage.

ASSIGNMENT: Recognize and write down the TRUE, NOBLE, RIGHT, PURE, ADMIRABLE, EXCELLENT, PRAISEWORTHY; when you’re making this list, do not listen to the lies! Any thought that sneaks into your mind that makes you feel less than any of those descriptions, throw it in the fire and let it burn!!!!

Keep Your Heart Pumpin & Spirit Movin

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the [whole] person; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
