FOCUS: Emotional eating

SOURCE: Dr. Caroline Leaf

April is Stress Awareness Month and it got me to thinking about Emotional eating: aren’t we all emotional eaters?

We celebrate with food; we show condolences or support with food; we even gather around found just to show how much we need each other.

I wonder could it be that it’s not so much the food that’s the issue but our emotions.

What if we got control of our emotions. We can usually control the food we turn to during the emotional roller coaster; the food feels like a safety net or a gas pedal depending on which road you’re on. But what about the emotions. Don’t emotions come from a trigger of perception concerning the situation? Perceptions create our responses = EMOTIONS

What if our perceptions changed and we began to see things different. If even in the midst of a “this is way beyond anything I ever imagined”; we paused and let God filter our response.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places; and talents in unexpected people, and give me the GRACE to tell them so. – unknown

What if, in this new season we allowed God to help us grow right where we are. Allow Him to reach into our hearts and find those perceptions that send us full speed ahead on a collision with doubt, fear, anxiety, comparison, inadequacy…(feel free to fill in the blanks)

Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:18, 19 AMP)

Our emotions are real but we cannot let them continue to feed us lies! We cannot continue to allow them to take us down dead-end roads!

Join us for the April Spring Cleaning F.O.C.U.S. (I’m not calling it a challenge, cuz it seems we’ve seen enough of those but we have yet to adjust our focus. It’s time to adjust our focus otherwise we’ll keep facing the same challenges!)

30 Day FOCUS: Travel plans

Wow it’s December and the count down to Christmas has already begun.

Man, New Year’s Eve is literally around the corner and I swear it feels like we were just listening to my Pastor’s message on putting God first.

That message has literally directed my every thought, every word, every consideration.

ESPECIALLY in those moments I wanted to pitch a fit and scream I QUIT!

I have continually reminded myself; not monthly, but I’m talking hourly, minute by minute, and at times it felt like every second.

Seek Him first, and all these things He’ll add to you.

Discipline. Focus on the FIRST not the things.

But knowing He literally was working on His plan (Jeremiah 29) kept my FOCUS & kept me in the fight.

FIRST. I set about making my goals for 2013 and “where I wanted to go/be”; when distractions (like that joy thief called comparison) tried to get the best of me, when I adjusted my focus to be ANCHORED; He still reminded me, FIRST.

Every plan. Every purpose. Every promise.

Anchored? FIRST.

Every thought.

Every consideration.

Every appointment.

Every desire.

Every goal.

Every set.

Every rep.

Every meal.

Every measurement.

Every THING. (Matthew 6:25-33 all those things)

  • To get where I wanted to be, I had to first know where I was coming from. I was not focused on it but at least accepted that’s what I was giving Him permission to lead me away from.
  • Know where I was going.
  • Who & what was leading me.
  • What were my motives.
  • What was my ultimate FOCUS.

It all came back to FIRST.

I heard this message from Christine Caine and thought it might bless your day. It’s really on knowing where you’re going and who’s going with you.

See I’ve wanted to take a trip with my girls for a LOOOOONG time. But I think I made the wrong plans because we seem to never get there.

This 30 day FOCUS is helping me to realize something, before we decide it’s time to plan a trip, first we need to make sure we know where we’re going.

Where are you going?

13 Things to Avoid

“Mentally strong people are willing to fail again and again, if necessary, as long as the learning experience from every “failure” can bring them closer to their ultimate goals.”

Holiday Body: Blessed MisFits

“You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. (Matthew 5:5 MSG)

Never underestimate the power of an invitation! If you’re the one being invited, humbly accept and humbly arrive. If you’re the one doing the inviting, open your house, your heart and your love.

I love my family because we are wildly quirky, perhaps strange to the average person, but they are mine! Every inside joke, every random look, every heart felt tear jerker memory…they’re mine and I’m blessed!

I love watching each of my kids find their ‘fit’ in our family and they’re learning each if their individual talents & gifts are needed for a specific purpose to complete our family puzzle.

Growing up with 7 siblings it amazes me that somehow we each played a unique role within our family & the people around us. But even as adults while I can see those roles being redefined; there were times I wondered how or where we ever ‘fit in’.

I sometimes question where I belong, which group I’m a part of and often I’ll watch the people around and try to see if we’d click.

Having a place to belong or connect with isn’t a about finding an identical match or carbon copy, I learned that quickly in my family. We’re all so very different yet collectively we’re one.

Think about keys & locks. They work because one needed to be shaped, refined and even a bit of heat grinding in order for it to work in the specific lock it was designed for.

Every friendship, job, skill I’ve ever had in my life I’ve tried to “fit” and God had truly shown me that as long as I would continue to squeeze or conform I would always be misfit. But if I allow Him to place me where I needed to be, I could be the specific one for that task!

I’m challenging you today to consider where you may have considered yourself or someone else the “misfit”. Ask God to continue to reshape you & put you exactly where you belong.

Luke 14

He went on to tell a story to the guests around the table. Noticing how each had tried to elbow into the place of honor, he said, “When someone invites you to dinner, don’t take the place of honor. Somebody more important than you might have been invited by the host. Then he’ll come and call out in front of everybody, ‘You’re in the wrong place. The place of honor belongs to this man.’ Red-faced, you’ll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left. “When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about! What I’m saying is, If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.” Then he turned to the host. “The next time you put on a dinner, don’t just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favor. Invite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks. You’ll be—and experience—a blessing. They won’t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned—oh, how it will be returned!—at the resurrection of God’s people.” (Luke 14:7-14 MSG)

The final 30 day of this challenge are committed to adjusting our FOCUS!!!

Get ready…get set…get inneractive!!!

If it’s toxic, Lose it

Can we just talk for a minute. Pull up a chair.

What we see, hear and say impacts our lives & beliefs.

You ever hear someone refer to something as mindless reading or mindless television. That’s an interesting description when you think about it, especially knowing that the material or topic doesn’t enhance your mind by any stretch of the word but what does happen is it actually requires a great deal of use of your mind.  Toxic thoughts take up space!

I was watching the previews of a few recent movie releases & some of the new line-ups of TV series & I just shook my head. They’re catchy. Hook, line and sinker catchy…before you know it, you’re sucked into this kinda life they’ve set up in the story line. My mom use to refer to soap operas as trash or smut tv.  It’s not just entertainment anymore, it’s entertaining certain lifestyles & opens a door into your mind, your emotions & imaginations.

My daughter is “hooked” on an internet based show about a gymnastics family and their everyday comings and goings. Now this show is actually harmless. But what’s really interesting is I watched her begin to mirror some of the ways of the gymnast-athletic daughter. Little things like organizing her desk, rearranging her bedroom and even cleaning her bedroom. SCORE FOR ME. But a major eye opener. If she was easily influenced by these subtleties which lead to a positive influence, how easily could she be lured into the reverse?

The same is true in our own lives. We’re drawn to things that peak our interest. No doubt about that. Our interests are usually a road map to our deepest affections and desires, this is where the seeds are sown.  Our desires lead us toward imaginations that become stirred up and next thing you know we are trying to mimic that way of living we’ve created inside of our imagination. Good or bad, we are influenced. Every seed produces some sort of harvest.

My pastor gave us a homework assignment. He simply said don’t give the devil ANY opportunity. Simple enough right? It’s like YEAH, no way will he get a chance to take anything else from me or get involved in MY life. And that’s the moment he starts conjuring up his plans.

Ephesians 4 breaks down some of those subtle plans but praise Jesus, there is a way of escape. See, if there’s something in your life that offends you, you have to get rid of it. By offend, I mean if it’s causing strife, upset, misdirection…DISease.

OFFENSE: annoyance or resentment brought about by a perceived insult to or disregard for oneself or one’s standards or principles.

The Old Way Has to Go

17-19 And so I insist—and God backs me up on this—that there be no going along with the crowd, the empty-headed, mindless crowd. They’ve refused for so long to deal with God that they’ve lost touch not only with God but with reality itself. They can’t think straight anymore. Feeling no pain, they let themselves go in sexual obsession, addicted to every sort of perversion.

20-24 But that’s no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well-instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.

25 What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.

26-27 Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry—but don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the Devil that kind of foothold in your life.

28 Did you use to make ends meet by stealing? Well, no more! Get an honest job so that you can help others who can’t work.

29 Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.

30 Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

31-32 Make a clean break with all cutting, backbiting, profane talk. Be gentle with one another, sensitive. Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.

I woke up a few days ago with this feeling like I could take over the world. I literally told someone I felt armed and dangerous!  Scriptures like Ephesians 4 make me feel armed & anchored! And yes, quite dangerous. Dangerous enough to punch fear in the face and lose some of the nonsense that’s held me captive!

Are you ready to lose it?

Your journey to freedom is directly attached to knowing what you want and knowing where you want to go. Period. You could jump in your car and start driving but if you don’t know where you want to go or how to get there, you’re going to drive in circles and quickly run out of gas.

STOP DRIVING IN CIRCLES. You were made for more than being stuck in a vicious cycle of defeat! -(Made To Crave)

You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn North. (Deuteronomy 2:3)
