Day 2 Advent: give yourself the gift of retreating during the holidays

Make Room for Advent –  Day 2

If you’re just joining us, we are practicing making some room for the Lord during this season of Advent. This year we’re reading the Naptime Dairies devotional Make Room For Advent along with thousands of other women who’ve decided there’s no better time to pause, than in the often hurried season of the holidays.

Follow along here and on social media by searching the hashtag #MakeRoomForAdvent or #NTDAdvent

Today, let’s take some time to retreat and stretch out and realize that Jesus will meet us right in the middle of our mess.

Let’s commit to take some time today, this week, this entire month to calm our spirits and clean our hearts.

This week’s gift is RETREAT!!!

red berries

The words from devotional contributor Becky Keife are such a gift. She reminds us “A messy house is better than a messy heart.  There’s nothing wrog with a clean house – shiny sinks and sparkling toilets can speak love and hospitality when prepared unto God. But if I’m choosing between the state of my home and the state of my heart, I know the better choice.”

On the 2nd day of Christmas, my trainer gave to me the gift of retreating to be alone with the Lord. Let’s recognize what’s really important through the Christmas season. Create some space with Holy Yoga teacher Caroline Williams

In case you missed it: Here’s Day 1

FOCUS: Emotional eating

SOURCE: Dr. Caroline Leaf

April is Stress Awareness Month and it got me to thinking about Emotional eating: aren’t we all emotional eaters?

We celebrate with food; we show condolences or support with food; we even gather around found just to show how much we need each other.

I wonder could it be that it’s not so much the food that’s the issue but our emotions.

What if we got control of our emotions. We can usually control the food we turn to during the emotional roller coaster; the food feels like a safety net or a gas pedal depending on which road you’re on. But what about the emotions. Don’t emotions come from a trigger of perception concerning the situation? Perceptions create our responses = EMOTIONS

What if our perceptions changed and we began to see things different. If even in the midst of a “this is way beyond anything I ever imagined”; we paused and let God filter our response.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places; and talents in unexpected people, and give me the GRACE to tell them so. – unknown

What if, in this new season we allowed God to help us grow right where we are. Allow Him to reach into our hearts and find those perceptions that send us full speed ahead on a collision with doubt, fear, anxiety, comparison, inadequacy…(feel free to fill in the blanks)

Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:18, 19 AMP)

Our emotions are real but we cannot let them continue to feed us lies! We cannot continue to allow them to take us down dead-end roads!

Join us for the April Spring Cleaning F.O.C.U.S. (I’m not calling it a challenge, cuz it seems we’ve seen enough of those but we have yet to adjust our focus. It’s time to adjust our focus otherwise we’ll keep facing the same challenges!)

Keep your heart pumpin, spirit movin & #getinneractive

Feel the music, share truth & rewrite the rules

 Feel the music

This is one of my Zumba heros! She’s 80-somethin’ years old, belongs to a motor cycle gang and takes tap dancing in addition to Zumba! And boy does she have moves. She comes to Zumba with her daughter who’s in her 60’s who plays the drums and drives an 18 wheeler! I mean talk about grabbing life and enjoying the ride.

She decided to choose joy. She makes me happy when I see her dance!

When I dance, it’s like moving to the joy I choose. Dance has become an expression of a deep confession I can’t put into words.

dI feel the music deep down in my soul. It makes me happy! Yes I will clap along cuz I feel like happiness is a truth!

I’ll wait while you get your dance on!

Could you imagine life without music? Ugg talk about blah!

What’s your favorite happy song? The one that just makes you ooze with joy?

If you had to give that song a color what color would it be?

Now imagine your life without that color? How does that make you feel?

Music can color our lives. The lyrics sort of paint a picture.

Music is the language of our soul.

I came across this video the other day and it just made me so happy I couldn’t even try to stop smiling.

Get your happy on!

Live in color

“Colors are the smiles of nature” – unknown

I’m so glad my life & wardrobe was delivered from blah! Life is better in color. I laugh because my fitness laundry resembles that of a crayon box explosion. I rarely share this story because very few people understand it. But here’s an opportunity because it’s bubbling up inside of me so I feel like somebody needs it.

My Truth

Several years ago I was restored from a wardrobe of brown, grey and black. Oh wait, no there was blue. Yes there was definitely navy blue. And that was the extent of my wardrobe. Every shirt, every pair of pants, every jacket, shoe and boot. Even my swimsuits were black (that was a whole other issue of freedom & confidence). I was comfortable in my dark clothing, yet I was extremely uncomfortable in my own skin.

It took lots of self assessments, spending time recognizing that all of the promises in the bible of forgiveness and restoration included me. It took a ton of letting go of my past, letting go of rejections, disappointment and resentment. I knew that God was doing something in me, that there was a huge purge and I could feel my shoulders pull back, my head began to lift higher and every muscle in my face started to take on a different structure. I never really said much to anyone concerning it I just slowly started adding color to my closet. I honestly think it was wearing the tropical colors in Zumba that started to pry me out of that shell.

But actually, it wasn’t until a friend asked me if I had grown taller that I realized something really did happen. She said she could see a visible difference that happened in me. She noticed I walked taller, I danced more freely and I was comfortable in my environments.

I cried later that night because that had been my prayer. I prayed for the shackles to come off so I could just dance! I believe I had entangled myself into a box of rules that I needed to look, act, speak, dance and even smile a certain way.

I wanted freedom and that wasn’t freedom.

I wanted to be free to move.

I wanted to be free to find my own fitness.

I wanted to be free to dance and be proud of my dance. I wanted to find my own fitness.

Finding my own ‘fitness’ meant standing face to face with the reality that maybe, just maybe, I was trying to live someone else’s idea of who I should be, or possibly living a life that I THOUGHT someone else expected me to live. The torture & defeat in both situations is in itself disappointment; attached to not being able to live up to what you think they think you should be. Talk about a tangled web of deception there.

The stress of trying to measure up, trying to figure out if you’re enough, trying to check your every move, every decision and everyTHING to see if it’s just like the ideal person (as distorted as that might be) you find yourself giving nearly 110% of who you are trying to be something & someone you were never intended to be.

That’s not freedom at all. That’s pure bondage. That’s living in a dark pit of deception.

But God doesn’t want us there. Praise God that His Mercy shows up even in the darkness and His light quiets the chaos.

He shines His light on us, not on the places we feel are inadequate but on the things He has done. How He created us, the gifts, the talents, the uniqueness in our creation. He wants us to see who we really are. He wants us to see how specifically He made us, no mistakes, no flaws just wonderful!

Spirit. Soul. Body. -wonderfully made

13 Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb.

14 I thank you, High God – you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration – what a creation!

15 You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something.

16 Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.

Strength & Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged.

God, your God is with you every step you take. -(Joshua 1 Message Version)

Ephesians 3: My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.

Glory to God in the church!
Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus!

Nutrition month: winning the weight battle

Last month I went on a diet. I made a confession that I really felt the need to take an honesty inventory and assessment of what I was eating or should I say, what I was feeding myself. My main reason for this was that I wasn’t seeing the result I thought I should’ve seen by now, so it was time to get real with myself. See what I discovered here.

Last month’s challenge inspired the Taste & See challenge for this month. Here’s what we’ve tasted so far.

Week 1 –Soul Food & Too Much Salt

Week 2 – Going Red

Week 3 – Blue & Purple nutrition for health

Week 3 Blue & Purple Super(food) Power!

Today I chose a cup of black berry, dark cherry, blueberry, strawberry frozen fruit blend to add to my Chocolate Shakeology smoothie!

Purple traditionally symbolizes royalty; blue, trust. But in such foods as blueberries, plums, purple cabbage, black currants, eggplant and purple grapes, these hues represent a vision of good health. (Source:

Shakeology’s phytonutrient & probiotic nutrition helps support proper digestion, increase nutrient absorption, and detoxification of the liver, kidneys and blood to restore health & vitality.

You’ll find all natural ingredients like Chlorella, Spirulina, Barley grass, Bromelain and Cellulase.

Winning the weight battle

“So much of our behavior that misses the mark of God’s calling for our lives is the result of insecurity” – Steven Furtick ‘Crash The Chatterbox’

Winning the weight battle isn’t planning a hard core workout staying in the gym for 3 hours relentlessly sweating til you can’t feel your legs.

Winning the weight battle isn’t force feeding foods that you think if you eat them enough you’ll enjoy them because you’ve linked the number on the scale to the food itself.

Winning the weight battle is recognizing that you are worth taking time for yourself to ‘TASTE & SEE’…

Winning the weight battle is recognizing the habits that need to be exchanged. Recognizing the truth in our habits. Recognizing that we do need help, recognizing that sometimes the reason we eat is fear. Recognizing sometimes the reason we stay on the scale is fear. Recognizing the reason we think we are what we weigh is fear. I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. I carried a lot of weight from my past. I carried every resentment, every regret, every report (dysfunction/statistic/rumor/word spoken over me). The weight we carry has less to do with our external lifestyles and much more to do with what’s happening on the inside. Everything from the thoughts we have, the aching & desires of our hearts and the perceptions we have about everything in life. BUT GOD wants to help us get rid of that weight and the dependance we’ve placed on food, fitness and false expectations.

Taste & see that the Lord is Good!

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

1I will bless the LORDat all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.2My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.3Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!4sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.5Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.6This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.7The angel of the LORDencamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.8Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

Nutrition month: the process of restoration with nutrition & red superfoods

A while back I started a new series called “inneractive MOMENT’em” this is an opportunity to empower you with words of affirmation and testimonies from others who have found inner strength. (Please contact us with your testimony!)

Today’s inneractive MOMENT’em is RESTORATION

:the act or {process} of returning something to its original condition by repairing it, cleaning it, etc.

: the act of bringing back something that existed before

: the act of returning something that was stolen or taken

Restoration is a noun. A thing.

A thing that moves.

An act of returning.

Repairing. Cleaning.

Bringing back.

Whatever was ruined. Dirty. Was or use to be. Stolen. Taken.

Restoration puts all the pieces back together!

Restoration makes all things beautiful. Just in time.

It’s just a matter of time.

SOUL FOOD: Ephesians 4:22-24 “change the former way of life that was part of the person you once were, corrupted by deceitful desires. 23 Instead, renew the thinking in your mind by the Spirit 24 and clothe yourself with the new person created according to God’s image in justice and true holiness.

Did you know: Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.

Many red fruits and veggies are loaded with powerful, healthy antioxidants — such as lycopene and anthocyanins — that may do everything from fight heart disease and prostate cancer to decrease the risk for stroke and macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in people aged 60 and older). Antioxidants soak up damaging free radicals.
