Yesterday a friend shared a t-shirt she found that read “SURVIVING MOTHERHOOD ON COFFEE & GRACE” of course immediately I asked where to get it, because seriously that’s my anthem and if I can have a tshirt to declare it; then it’s official!!! #thenewtattoo Last night I asked my husband to pray for me because the past few nights I haven’t really slept and I woke up this morning wondering if the prayer worked. Puffy eyes, stiff necked and groggy I’m tempted to say no {not yet}. Then the Holy Spirit immediately taps my shoulder and says “remember the whole coffee and grace thing, well one of those is overriding the other”… Y’all if I can just be honest for a second… I love coffee. But grace, I desperately need it; like being dehydrated, starving and horribly broken and it’s the only thing that will keep me alive!
Life is scary; people get rude; our kids grow up right in front of us and we blink and the wonder years are gone; death happens and grieving feels like it’s on a schedule of to-dos; competition & perfection rises up at the most inconvenient times; hustle becomes the buzz word of the decade and if you’re not on that train you’re the odd man out; friendships get thick & thorny and your purpose feels thin & flaky; authenticity becomes diluted to a hashtag and then like a flood God starts reminding you that where He has you RIGHT NOW is intentional.
When my hands are ready to go up and the towel is ready to be thrown in; He sends His Holy Spirit to remind you of the redemption, freedom & identity you have in Christ.
He comes like a gardener to uproot weeds that have been choking the life out of the fruit that’s been bitter, to tend to the growth of the sweet, fragrant and life-giving fruit. He comes like a healing balm to the mend brokenness that festers and invades our hearts, homes and happiness and He restores us back to His original design. This summer I set my heart & my mind on being intentionally available to my family & purpose – without missing a beat He consistently shines His light on the darkness and illuminates the joy. Where are you on your eating habits? Where are you spiritually? Are you feeding doubts, emotions, fears, faith, comparison, hope, purpose? Freedom – TRUE FREEDOM – in your own skin; doesn’t come attached to a checklist of anything that feels like captivity, like if you don’t do it right then you have to quit and chalk it up as a failed effort. And I continue to use it whenever new issues, people, things, and problems try to overwhelm me! 

And yes, you’ll need to continue to ‘work it out’ on a regular basis just like one visit to the gym won’t make you fit, one prayer won’t keep you well!

No spirit of fear

Can I ask you, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone suggests eating ‘healthy’?

For some people the first thing they think is bland, boring, stuff they flat out don’t like.

For others it’s the difficult sacrifices of their favorite morsels of daily living.

And yet there’s still a small percentage who embrace the possibilities of ‘YESSSSSS change is sooo good for me right now’…

➕ SPIRIT – pick a scripture, write it down and post it where you’ll see it through the your day, ask God WHAT DOES THIS MEAN then listen and savor!


➕ SOUL – Feed your hope not your fear! Your emotions, imagination, mind, will, and expectations become your life; feed them God-filled life giving ‘food’!


➕ BODY – THIS IS ACTIVE, this is where you get to move. Every time you create movement your body feeds your mind and your spirit and it returns the favor! Every food you choose will either move you in the direction of abundance or depletion. Every activity you choose will either increase or decrease your life. Choose beneficially!!!

Forgive & give grace.

Forgiveness seems to be one of the most overlooked solutions to life’s struggles. I wonder if it’s overlooked because it requires us to do work that might be more intense than we are willing to sweat out! Or maybe because it’s kinda like telling someone they need to drink more water or stretch. It’s too easy and too boring. Or could it be that it’s not a seemingly sexy solution & doesn’t have a wow that’s AWESOMESAUCE SIGN ME UP attached to it?

Yesterday I was introduced to a song called “Pressure” by Jonathan McReynolds.

The lyrics were a heart cry to God, almost a proclaimation…

“I need to rid myself of the pressure to be someone else that the world has made. Jesus help me be me and only see you, let me decrease and Glorify you. I just want to live for you, nobody else but you. ”

Y’all I think this could officially be the “adjust my focus” theme song for the holidays.

 

I dislike the pressures of the holidays, which is why I started this Holiday Body challenge in the first place.

Yesterday I walked in Walmart and Christmas looks like it exploded.

Music and all.

I could hardly find the thanksgiving table cloths or pumpkin anything because there were SOOOO MANY snowmen and candy cane colored this and that’s. Now don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love Christmas season. But seriously, the pressure to hurry up and buy & Santa when will you get here, kinda steals the joy.

That’s what happens to us during the holiday seasons. Pressure to hurry up and be. I refuse to do that.  I love that so many people use November to spur on shouts of praise and thankfulness. Let’s get a little bit rowdy about our own joy, freedom & thankfulness – get a little crazy for the peace we’ve found in our bodies, our purposes and our passions. Isn’t that what thanksgiving is for anyway? Being thankful?

During this holiday body challenge our primary focus is to get glad and MOVE IT – Move your body, Move your focus, Move the obstacles, Move your food choices toward options that you can manage using the 80/20 principle.

80 % of your food choices should include fruits, veggies, grains, proteins and dairy (provided there are no known intolerance/allergies/sensitivities) & the remaining 20 % available for what I call the guilt free indulgences.

Honestly y’all, this Holiday Body Challenge is full of movement & motivation to get the most out of our holidays!! This will NOT be a BEAST MODE TIL THE BINGEING BEGINS. THAT is dangerous and extremely unhealthy! THIS is about moderation, balance and basics. Knowing what works, what doesn’t, moving more, eating good food and enjoying life. Ok I think you get it.

A few months ago we got Back to Basics in a self-discovery challenge (Eat, Pray, Love) and we were talkin’ about the balance of really enjoying food.

I got to thinkin’ …we are all, or have been at some time, hungry, craving, emotional eaters, closet munchers, bingers, extremists (NO CARBS, ONLY PROTEINS, NO GLUTEN, NO MEAT etc) for whatever reason or another.

Whatever pattern of eating we’ve adopted; misguided and left to our own devices, it eventually becomes harmful not only to our bodies but eventually to our soul, as well.

Consider for a moment that we tend to jump on board the latest belly-flattening trend because we are ABSolutely certain this is for us, this is the plan we’ve been waiting for and FINALLY we can get a handle on how to eat. So we jump in head first! Or should I say mouth first!

Isn’t it safe to say that while it might be a desire to get flatter abs, but it’s more of a craving or desire to finally be satisfied; whether satisfied with food you enjoy, satisfied with the external results, or satisfied with the feeling of accomplishment. When we feed insatiable appetite, they don’t subside they grow. WHATEVER you feed will grow.

As we approach the holiday season, let’s face it, there are some intense moments that we might be dreading. Gatherings we’d rather come down with the flu than attend, and some awkward conversations that no matter how festive we dress the turkey table; someone always walks away feeling uninvited.

Let’s commit to using our every day tasks to shine the Light of Christ in our families, communities, circles of influence and especially on social media. Let’s commit this month to fuel our bodies with good food, fill our hearts with the life-giving Word of God and like Rachel Kinkaid of Influence Network says, let’s #getaftergrateful explore thankfulness in our own hearts and walk a little close to Jesus in November.
